My Personal Mission Statement

My Personal Mission Statement

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.' We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
(A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles", Harper Collins, 1992. From Chapter 7, Section 3])

A great way to begin 2012 is to put in words your own Personal Mission Statement. You know that you have a purpose in life. You know in your heart what matters most. Indeed, your purpose and values are expressed everyday, by how you live-sometimes consciously sometimes not.

In 2009, I was 23, I came to a point in my life that I do not know what I want and I do not know where I am going. My mom would often tell me that I usually undergo a crisis every time I am going from one stage of life to another as I experienced from childhood to adolescence. At 23, I was a fresh grad and I was doing my first job. I was in the realm of the unknown as I cannot define what I want to do with my life. I started having a thirst for knowledge. I started quenching my thirst by doing a quest. I looked into the different libraries and personal collections of people. Some of the greatest books are written a long time ago. Some are written in unknown ages. But man was able to dig deep into the chests of knowledge and was able to excavate such treasures. Thus, my passion for continuing learning begun.

Some of these hidden treasures are now at hand. But it needs refinement. Some are still to be found. These treasures are more than the net worth of Bill Gates or Warren Buffet. These are so precious that I decided to dedicate my life in this passion.

In 2009, together with my workmates in St. Peter, we run through the book, 7 Habits of Highly effective people by Stephen Covey. I read it and tried applying the theories. Stephen Covey has a site named after his organization --- Franklin Covey. I'm pondering on the second habit which is Begin with an end in mind. This habit helped me develop my personal mission statement.

Mahatma Gandhi's mission is captured in a short list of active statements. You can craft your mission in this style, starting each sentence with "I shall" or "I will."

Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day:
  • I shall not fear anyone on Earth.
  • I shall fear only God.
  • I shall not bear ill will toward anyone.
  • I shall not submit to injustice from anyone.
  • I shall conquer untruth by truth.
  • And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering.
My Personal Mission Statement helped me define my goals. I hope you get the time to write your own as this will define your life. Always put in mind that success is in God's hands and that all things are possible in Him. So whatever your plans may be, offer it for His greater glory. Surely, success is at hand in Jesus name. So to end this blog post, here is the prayer of Jabez to guide us for 2012:

Have a Super Blessed 2012! :)

Love lots,
Rosselle
